P2 | LIGIER JSP2

  • The Ligier JS P2 is a racing car designed and built by French manufacturer Onroak Automotive and named in partnership with French former racing driver Guy Ligier.Designed for the Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) regulations, it is intended as a second option to Onroak's Morgan LMP2 that has been competing since 2012. As well as being the first closed-cockpit car offered by Onroak, it is also the first car they designed entirely in-house. The JS P2 debuted at the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans, and has been campaigned in the FIA World Endurance Championship, European Le Mans Series, Asian Le Mans Series and United SportsCar Championship.
  • Onroak initially planned to develop a car for the Le Mans Prototype 1 category but cancelled these plans to concentrate on the LMP2 category. The design was seen by Onroak as marketable in North America where closed-cockpit designs, which were required for all LMP1 cars, were also prominent choices for LMP2s and Daytona Prototypes in the new United SportsCar Championship. The LMP1 design was therefore evolved into an LMP2 design with measures taken to assure the car met the Automobile Club de l'Ouest's (ACO) cost limitations in LMP2. The car was designed to be able to utilize available LMP2 engines: Nissan and Judd's naturally aspirated V8 engines and Honda's turbocharged V6 engine. A high downforce sprint design and a low downforce Le Mans setup are offered for the car.
  • Naming of the JS P2 came about through an alliance between Onroak and Guy Ligier's partnership of Equipe Ligier and Automobiles Martini. The JS P2 follows Ligier's naming scheme of his cars being named after French racing driver Jo Schlesser (JS). The partnership included Onroak taking over development of Ligier-Martini's Group CN car.

  • The Oreca 03 is a Le Mans Prototype built by Oreca in 2011. It is built within the revised 2011 ACO regulations for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car made its début at the 12 Hours of Sebring run by Signatech Nissan and is set to race at the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is the third car that Oreca has produced after the 01 and FLM09.
  • To meet the new regulations bought in by the ACO for esrf2rance racing, the 03 has been cost-capped along with all 2011 LMP2 cars with a price of €345,000. The engines used in LMP2 cars for 2011 are production-based and there is a wide variety of engines to choose from that can be put into an 03. The five teams racing it in 2011 have chosen two of these engine. Most of the teams, including Oreca themselves, have chosen the Nissan-powered 4.5 L V8 powerplant which is similar to the engine used by Nismo in Super GT. The Swiss team of Race Performance have opted for a Judd BMW-powered 3.6 L V8 engine based on the BMW M3. Both engines produce a limited 460 bhp (343.0 kW). The 03 is build around a light carbon fibre monocoque chassis with an open top bodywork. Suspension is by double wishbones and push-rods on all four corners. Stopping power is provided by carbon-ceramic disc brakes.
  • The Oreca 03 uses the same body and aero package developed by Oreca's chief-engineer David Floury for the LMP1 car campaigned during the 2009 and 2010 season by the works team. The blade-shaped roll-over structure is still a direct descendent of the original LC70 design.
  • In two seasons, the ORECA 03 LMP2 has already had numerous successes in esrf2rance racing. The teams running the car have shown both its speed and reliability. Tailored for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the ORECA 03 has also shown on all types of tracks, proof of its adaptability.

P2 | ORECA 05

  • New Le Mans Prototype designed by ORECA Technology for the LM P2 class, the ORECA 05 is now ready to take to the track. Entered by KCMG and Thiriet by TDS Racing in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and the European Le Mans Series, the ORECA 05 will take its first steps in a couple of days. Designed around a closed cockpit, the car integrates some new concepts, safety wise as well. But most importantly, it does not merely settle for the required limits. Its philosophy is not only to go faster than its rivals but also further: its DNA is all about future.
  • ORECA now enters a new era with the ORECA 05. Alongside the ORECA 03, open-cockpit prototype which has been greatly successful since its launching in 2011, this closed-top prototype will make its debut in competition in April, in Silverstone. As an outcome of the in-depth work lead by ORECA Technology's design bureau, this car sets itself apart from the many contestants it will face as part of this particularly competitive class.
  • From the ORECA 05 emerges a vision of the future, on all levels, including safety. Thus, some zylon anti-intrusion panels have been integrated to the chassis. In case of an accident, they prevent any mechanical components from coming into the chassis. Though this technology is currently not a mandatory one in LM P2, it stands as a real asset safety wise. Similarly, the car also comprises a rear crash box that has been homologated via a rear crash test. That feature is not imposed by the regulations neither but the design office decided not to simply make do with the current requirements.
  • Furthermore, the ORECA 05 also differs in its size. Engineers have opted for a 1900mm-wide car, whereas most of the other LM P2 are 2000mm wide. A choice that meets the needs of the future 2017 rules and regulations. Although body parts will probably have to evolve by that time, the car as it is today will be easily updatable to the next regulations. That global decision was a way to take teams' budgetary issues into account: that investment will not be limited to a two-year period (2015-2016) but potentially spread over six years. That also means that teams will be able to benefit from a higher resale value.
  • Some other elements, such as weight and centre of gravity, have required specific research. Weight reduction was one of the main objectives on the agenda: engineers have done their best in order to significantly set the car apart from its rivals on that level. Consequently, mass distribution has been seriously optimised.
  • Mechanically speaking, the ORECA 05 also embraces innovations and comprises numerous updates. Different elements which were regarded as weak points on the ORECA 03 have been modified, namely the power steering system, now electric, and the starter. As for the gearbox, it features a more compact, latest-generation gearbox casing. In order to minimise risk taking due to the fact that the car is new, some already well-tried and tested, reliable solutions have been decided on. The suspension parts for instance are new but both concepts and technology have been verified and certified with a panel of cars manufactured by ORECA Technology.
  • Finally, some important work has been done on the ORECA 05 aerodynamics. Performance was a priority, as always, and the design bureau went one step further in its research, refining the slightest details. Besides, the car's pitch-sensitivity was one of the focus points, allowing customers to easily make the most of a whole range of settings. Once again, that demonstrates how engineers have paid much attention to the teams' feedback.

P2 | ZYTEK GIBSON

  • The 07S was designed with a completely new, twin roll hoop chassis but using the proven 06S aero package. Some aerodynamic updates were made. The twin roll hoops meant that a new engine cover had to be designed and the opportunity was taken to change the shape and reduce the drag. The new chassis was designed and built to LMP1 crash regulations. This means that it is particularly strong in LMP2 guise. All the FIA crash tests had to be carried out anew, the first time that Zytek as a group had done this for a chassis.
  • Mechanically the rear end is the same as the 06S, although the front suspension had to be modified because of the new chassis. The fuel system was completely revised. Effectively, over a two-year period, Zytek had built a car completely different from the 04S.
  • The GZ09S aero package includes a rear wing to meet with the latest regulations. The width is less, as is the box size. The end plate fitting has also changed. The plate is flat as before but is now simply fitted to the tail section with an angle bracket, as mandated by the new regulations. The tail section has been changed to generate more down force. It now features inner dive planes, which it did not have in 2008. The side bleed in front of the radiator behind the front wheel has been changed with a larger bleed area. There is a panel that closes off the hole, which is also there to legalise the side opening.
  • The front suspension geometry has been changed for the GZ09S. This has been done to help reduce understeer in the car and also to protect tyre life, a factor that is has becoming increasingly important with the new pit stop regulations.
  • In addition to the front suspension geometry, the GZ09S has a new AP Racing brake caliper package, a step forward for stiffness and cooling. The brake duct system has also been changed to take full advantage of this.

  • Onroak Automotive completes its sports prototype range with the Ligier JS P3, a car aimed at the new LM P3 category. The French constructor was already present with success in the LM P2 category with the Ligier JS P2 and the Morgan LM P2, and in the CN category with the Ligier JS 53 EVO. Onroak Automotive waited for the final set of regulations to be announced before signing off the design of the Ligier JS P3, the aim being to present the most complete car complying with the LM P3 regulations. The constructor wants to take the time required to fine-tune this new LM P3 sports prototype before its homologation, which will then be frozen for three years.
  • The Ligier JS P3 will take full advantage of its close links with the Ligier JS P2, in particular in terms of its design and its aerodynamics directly inspired by the latter, a choice dictated by efficiency.
  • In addition, the Onroak Automotive design office knows all there is to know about adapting all kinds of engines to its chassis, in particular the Nissan V8s.The Ligier JS P3 will be presented at Le Mans in June 2015 during the Le Mans 24-Hours week. A limited production run will be made this year and the first cars will be available for teams in September.

GTE | ASTON MARTIN V8 VANTAGE

  • The Aston Martin Vantage GT2 is the most powerful racing variant of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage family. The Vantage GT2 is based on the V8 engined Aston Martin Vantage road car but is designed to run on both standard race fuel or E85 bio-ethanol.
  • Debuting in 2008 the GT2 is designed to meet FIA and ACO GT2 class regulations, the Vantage will become a customer car for use in the FIA GT Championship, American Le Mans Series, Le Mans Series, and 24 Hours of Le Mans.
  • The Aston Martin Vantage GT2's engine is a modified version of the standard 4.3 litre Aston Martin V8 from the road car. The larger 4.5 litre engine retains the road car’s cylinder block, heads and crankshaft, but uses competition components, including cylinder heads, con-rods, valves, camshafts and a racing exhaust system. The developed engine features a dry sump lubrication system allowing the engine to be positioned low in the chassis, for an optimised centre of gravity.
  • The car uses the original bonded aluminium chassis supplied by Aston Martin, but uses carbon fibre panels (exc roof) and features front splitter, rear diffuser, rear wing and a flat floor. The V8 Vantage GT2 has been tuned to be capable of running E85 ethanol or normal racing fuel, dependent on the racing series.
  • The GTE is a significantly updated version of the original GT2 car and has been specifically designed to compete in championships running to the Automobile Club De L'Ouest GTE regulations. Under the bonnet, the engine is based on the standard Aston Martin V8, but with competition components including cylinder heads, connecting rods, valves, camshafts and a racing exhaust system. As in the road car, the transmission is mid-rear mounted, but with a six-speed semi-automatic sequential transmission and competition clutch. The transmission also has a dedicated oil/air cooling system.
  • The bonded aluminium structure is taken directly from the V8 Vantage road car. Into this, Aston Martin Racing integrates an aerospace specification steel roll cage built to FIA standards. With the exception of the roof, the bodywork is manufactured from lightweight carbon fibre and features an advanced aerodynamic package with carbon fibre splitter, flat floor and diffuser, and a carbon fibre rear wing designed using the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques.
  • The Vantage GTE retains the road car's double wishbone suspension layout at the front and rear, but with bespoke wishbones and coil springs over Koni adjustable aluminium bodied dampers. Powerful but lightweight six-piston Brembo racing calipers are fitted to the front axle with similar four-piston calipers at the rear.

  • BMW Motorsport announced in February 2008 that Rahal Letterman Racing will campaign two factory-backed E92 M3s in the American Le Mans Series in 2009, following a two-year absence by the brand. This was the cover car for the simulation racing game Need for Speed: Shift. Schnitzer Motorsport entered 2 cars at the 1000 km of Spa and finished 4th after a move by the Ferrari in the final corner.
  • For 2010, BMW Motorsport has been granted entry in the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the 2010 24 Hours Nürburgring. BMW Motorsport/Schnitzer Motorsport went onto to take an overall win at the 24 Hours Nürburgring with the #25 M3 GT2 of Jörg Müller, Augusto Farfus, Pedro Lamy, and Uwe Alzen while the top competitors from Porsche and Audi dropped out one by one. In addition, one of the M3 GT2's that competed at Le Mans (#79) has been chosen as the 17th BMW Art Car, which will be done by American artist, Jeff Koons. At the 24 Hours of Spa, BMW qualified 2nd and maintained 1st with the #79 car throughout the race until it succumbed to a suspension failure with just half an hour remaining, leaving the top spots to Porsche. The BMW M3s won the GT2 category in the ILMC 1000 km of Zhuhai.
  • In 2011, the BMW achieved a 1,2 finish in the 12 Hours of Sebring. In the 2011 American Le Mans Series GT class, BMW Team RLL swept all categories, winning the GT manufacturer, team and driver championships. They contest another year in the ALMS GT class, coming off of another fantastic win at the 2012 60th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring. The M3 GT2 Race Car is to be replaced by the BMW Z4 GTE, a GT/GTE specification of the successful BMW Z4 GT3 beginning with the 2013 season of ALMS.
  • The engineers at BMW Motorsports have put together a brand new car based on the E92 BMW M3 coupe. Gutting the car got the weight down to just 2745 lbs, which will let it move pretty quick with BMW’s race-tuned 4.0L DOHC V-8 under the hood. According to BMW, the engine turns out “more than” 450 hp and “about” 358 lb-ft of torque and puts the power down through a sequential six-speed racing transmission with a carbon-fiber clutch. Keeping the power in check are a mechanical limited-slip differential and big 14.9-in brakes clamped by six-piston calipers up front and 14.0-in brakes clamped by four-piston calipers out back. A set of RAYS 18-in forged magnesium wheels wrapped with Dunlop tires will put the ponies to the pavement.

  • The Chevrolet Corvette C7.R is a grand tourer racing car built by Pratt & Miller and Chevrolet for competition in endurance racing. It is a replacement for the Corvette C6.R racing car, using the C7 generation Chevrolet Corvette as a base. The C7 road car was noted to incorporate development from the Corvette C6.R, thus those properties also carry over to the race car. The Corvette Racing C7.R races in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class.
  • The Corvette C7.R had its official unveiling at the 2014 NAIAS in Detroit. The car made its first testing appearance, in camouflage, at the Rolex Motorsports Union at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track. The car's new livery and details were revealed on January 13, 2014.
  • Corvette Racing had a total of 4 wins in the C7.R's inaugural season. Those wins came at Long Beach, Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen and Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.
  • In 2015, Corvette Racing had a total of 3 wins in the C7.R. The car won the first two North American Endurance Cup races at the 53rd Rolex 24 at Daytona in January and the 63rd Annual Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring 2 months later driven by Jan Magnussen, Ryan Briscoe, and Antonio Garcia in the Tudor United SportsCar Championship. The C7.R finished the year in third place behind the Porsche 911 RSR and BMW Z4 GTE and ahead of the Ferrari 458 Italia GT2. The Corvette C7.R scored its first Le Mans win at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans, with Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner, and Jordan Taylor driving the #64 Corvette to victory in the GTE-Pro class. It is also Corvette Racing's 8th win at the circuit. Corvette Racing won endurance racing's infamous "triple crown" with wins at the 24 hours of Daytona, 12 hours of Sebring, and the 24 hours of Le Mans.
  • On the car's inaugural race of the year, the 2016 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, the Corvette racing team scored a class win with a photo finish between the numbers 3 and 4 cars, driven by Oliver Gavin and Antonio Garcia. The cars finished .034 seconds apart from one another. In that year, the Corvette C7.R scored its second 12 Hours of Sebring win with car #4 driven by Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Marcel Fässler in the GTLM Class. The C7.R did poorly in the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans, qualifying last in the GTE Pro category and finishing the race 7th and 10th in the GTE-Pro class. The #4 Corvette C7.R went on to win the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship in the GTLM class. They won the drivers', team, and manufacturers' championship, as well as the North American Endurance cup. Corvette Racing also claimed its milestone 100th win for the team with its 1st place finish at Lime Rock in the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.

  • With the Michelotto developed F430 GT(C), Ferrari finally managed to break Porsche's stronghold on what is currently known as the GT2 or GTE class. Introduced ahead of the 2006 season, the V8-engined machine won its class in all major championships and races at least once. With well over 50 examples produced, it was also the most popular customer racing car produced by Ferrari since the days of the legendary 250 GT.
  • In 2010 the F430 road car was replaced by the all-new 458 Italia and late in that same year the first pictures of a competition version emerged. Naturally, Michelotto had been called in again to turn Ferrari's latest road car into a top GT2/GTE contender. Since the launch of the F430 GT, the level of competition had increased considerably with the likes of Corvette, Aston Martin and BMW also joining the fray, so the Padua based company certainly had its work cut out.
  • The 458 Italia's lightweight aluminium spaceframe chassis also forms the core of its racing derivative. Where allowed by the regulations the suspension geometry has been optimised for the track. The 4.5 litre V8 engine is also carried over but due to the mandatory restrictors only produces around 470 bhp compared to the 570 bhp put out by the road car. This power is transferred to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox, operated by a conventional gear-lever
  • Testing of the 458 Italia GT2 commenced late in 2010 with works driver Jamie Melo clocking up many miles on Ferrari's Fiorano track. Michelotto continued the development work well into 2011 and the first customer cars were barely ready for the official Sebring test in February. A month later at the season opening Sebring 12 Hours four 458s were present but various teething problems prevented them from vying for the top positions in the GTE class.
  • The 458 Italia GT2's first class win came two weeks later when the JMW Motorsport example led two sister cars home during the Le Castellet 6 Hours. For the all-important 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, five examples are entered. Judging from the times set during the Le Mans Test, the new Ferrari will certainly be among the favourites for another GT class win.

  • For many years Porsche 911 derivatives dominated what is today the GTE class. Cars from other manufacturers did score the odd victory but those were clearly exceptions to the rule. With the introduction of the Ferrari F430 in 2006 the balance gradually started to shift and with the arrival of more manufacturers, the Porsche gradually lost its leading position. Especially thanks to the cars' rock solid reliability, the 911s did continue to score good results in the long distance events.
  • Among the reasons why the '997' model was losing competitiveness was the relatively short wheelbase. Another weakness was the radiator configuration of the road car with two small radiators mounted on the front corners ahead of the wheels. Although easily damaged in case of even a small accident, the rules dictated these should be retained and used. This resulted in many early retirements for the 997 with what looked like only superficial damage. These issues were addressed while developing the seventh generation, or '991', of the 911, which was launched in 2012.
  • Compared to the outgoing model, the all-new 911 featured a 10 cm longer wheelbase and just a single radiator, mounted centrally in the nose. Needless to say, these features were incorporated in the new 911 RSR developed for the 2013 season. A distinct difference compared to the road going 911 was the use of double-wishbone suspension at the front instead of the McPherson struts fitted on the standard car. In order to reduce weight the car was completely stripped and many of the separate body panels like the doors were replaced with carbon-fibre pieces. A full-width rear wing was also part of the package.
  • The only major component carried over from the outgoing 911 GT3 RSR was the tried and trusted engine. This was partly due to save resources but also because the new GT3 road car engine, with direct injection, was not yet homologated. The all-aluminium unit displaced just under four litres and breathing through 29.3 mm restrictors, it produced around 460 bhp. The flat six engine was bolted to a newly developed six-speed sequential gearbox. This was actuated by paddles behind the steering wheel. Fully assembled, the car tipped the scales at the mandatory minimum weight of 1245 kg.
